Sallie Fund

Sallie here!

Things have been busy at our house. I'm trying to adjust to my lack of vision. I'm a small dog, and now I have a habit of following Dawn everywhere and getting under foot. I'm constantly tripping her by accident.

Dawn says it is like I don't realize I can't see. I think I can do everything I used to do, like run around and do zoomies--only I run into the walls. Or cry at the gate to go up and down the stairs like before--only I fall if left alone. I used to love to chase squirrels but now, since I can't see them, I bark at every little noise to frighten them away. I think I just frighten Dawn instead, because she doesn't know what the heck I'm barking at.

But I have my energy back. I'm eating well and have been good with my insulin shots. The truth is I wouldn't be here, hanging out with my best friend, Alien, if it weren't for the help I received from my friends in Blogville and North Shore Animal League.

When I heard the news that NSAL started a fund in my name to help others with emergency vet bills, I was truly honored!

Here is the link:

We are hoping to spread the word so other pet owners--who don't have the support of a loving on-line community like we did--can receive some help with medical costs.

Thanking you for your continued love and support!

We have the best friends in the universe!

Sweetie we are having the same problem with our Pip a Jack who is over 15 now. The stairs are the real problem and we have to be very careful. Take care and glad everything else is OK. Sucks you can't chase squirrels anymore. Have a fabulous Friday.
Best wishes Molly

When I was a kid, we had a dog who went blind. We didn't even realize it until we moved and she began running into everything.

I'm hope you're doing well otherwise, Sallie.

Sallie, I'm so hap-pee to hear that you're doing so well. We also had a blind Min Pin once and we were amazed at all the things she could still do in spite of not being able to see.

Hugs to Alien too!

Fantastic to hear from you Sallie. Glad you're up and about. We run into stuff when we're playing and we can see. So girl, get out there and zoom! Soon the noises will become familiar though squirrels still need to be barked at.

Hi Sallie, it's great to hear you're doing so much better now. Keep up the good work! What a great honor to have a fund named after you.

We love NSAL! Mommy use to live on the North Shore of Long Island. That's where she grew up so she knows them well!

Sallie, this is YoYoMa. I am blind too and when I joined the WDA I had a lot of adjusting to do. One thing that helps us sightless ones is to use a change of texture to mark boundaries. Like momma put a welcome mat at the entrance to the doggie door on both sides so I can find my way in and out. The bedroom has no carpet but the hallway does. Anyway, you get the idea. Momma still keeps the basement stairs gated so I do not fall down them. And we built a ramp on one side of the deck and now all the pups use it! Different smells help us find our way around too. Like those warming fragrance things with a different scent for places you need to find. Getting used to noises you cannot see the source of IS tough and your people need to just be patient and work with you sitting out in the yard together reassuring you when you get nervous. Please let us know if we can help make your adjustment less difficult.

We are thrilled that a fund was set up in your name to help others in need. The League is a wonderful resource!

It's gonna be OK Sallie. It will get better, I've been blind for over 2 years and I memorized my house and stick close to Mona when we are outside. If Mona barks so do I. Mommy says I see with my heart anyway and don't need to see.

Ber brave....Smiff ya later....Weenie

I'm really enjoying the theme/design of your blog. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility problems? A couple of my blog readers have complained about my blog not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Safari. Do you have any solutions to help fix this problem?
